How to start your retirement together as a couple before AND after the wedding!

My friends over at Archer Investment Management in Raleigh, NC have sent me some amazing information to share with you ~ now that you are going to be saying “I do” soon! When starting your life and retirement life together as a couple, these points will make you think~

Engaged or Just Married?  Ok, Now What To Do About Money?

Couples often ask us what is the best way to handle finances together.  The answer is always the same – whatever keeps your relationship happy.  However, it is important for couples to talk about their financial situation and to be transparent with each other’s wishes.  During this conversation, talk about your future goals and hopes for your life.  These conversations should continue throughout the relationship and will evolve as life changes.  Co-managing finances is not just combining checking accounts and paying bills.  We recommend spending time together addressing the following items:

Financial success hinges on cash flow.  It is critical to understand how much the household is spending on a monthly and annual basis.  Make a budget and stick to it.

Discuss each person’s savings goals and expectation of spending.  Figure out how much may be needed for an emergency fund.  Some couples realize that one person’s comfort level for emergency savings is drastically different than the other.  If there is already plenty of cash available for an emergency fund, what will you do with the excess?  Will you open a joint account for investing those funds and can you contribute to that on a monthly basis?

Being upfront about any significant debt is important to both the relationship in general and the financial success of the household.  Debt can cause problems in many ways, so it is best to have open communication about that issue immediately.

Typically, households do not have both parties making the exact same amount of money.  Share income and future income potential with each other and be open if there are issues with a big discrepancy.  Also, take time to review your company benefits together and see what each other’s options are for retirement saving and health insurance.  If one person does not have a company sponsored retirement plan and the other does, engage in a conversation on how to maximize retirement savings utilizing one plan or using other vehicles such as an IRA.  This is a good time to also review any necessary beneficiary designations and make sure they are updated.

Young, healthy couples have the benefit of obtaining insurance at a lower cost than older couples.  Consider income replacement needs and any outstanding debt when you are factoring in how much life insurance to purchase and what type of insurance.

While never a pleasant topic, it is important to discuss your plans for your estate after you pass away.  This is a critical step to take in situations where couples have children and/or are in second marriages.  Finally, find out your state’s requirements for both financial and health care powers of attorney and have those documents drafted as well.

Finally, determine who will be handling the household finances or divide up the responsibilities.  Make sure both parties are always engaged in the decisions and understand the household finances.  Relationships thrive on trust and transparency, especially with regard to money.  Starting off on the right foot will make a huge difference in your relationship over time.  A financial advisor can go through all of this with you and help you to make great financial decisions along the way.  Consider hiring one to work with you through this process.  Sometimes we can see the picture more clearly as outside looking in and can facilitate some of the difficult conversations.  At the end of the day, the healthiest relationships in regards to finances are ones that have open, honest communication.

Raleigh Mitzvah Photographer – Temple Beth Or and Crabtree Marriott Mitzvah { Tara }

I am catching up on the blogging! This time each year, we reorganize and prepare for rest of the season. We have also been busy photographing events and portraits. Mix in some video and painting, and there is not enough time for blogging! I am getting ready for Arti & Mitesh’s Indian wedding in Wilmington this weekend. This will be a two day assignment for me. A really big wedding- around 600 guests at the Wilmington Convention Center! Mica will be working with me as a second photographer/ assistant.

One of the fun events this year has been Tara’s Bat Mitzvah! Earlier, I did a portrait session in our studio. The session was fun and below is one of Tara’s favorite image from the session. The image was printed and framed for display at the party. Guests were able to write on the white mat.

Tara’s wish for winter theme came true when it snowed in Raleigh on Friday! It was a winter wonderland on Saturday morning! But, our portrait session at the Temple Beth Or was on schedule. I created traditional portraits as well as some fun and creative images.

The mitzvah celebration party was at the Raleigh Marriott Crabtree Valley. The ballroom looked beautiful. DJ Damien Maass made the party fun with music and games! I have enjoyed working with Damien- he is very helpful with keeping us aware of the timeline. Damien had dancers from Elevate to keep the dance floor busy.

Once I arrived at the Marriott, I setup the Greenscreen photobooth. This photobooth is always exciting for kids! We usually offer choice of four digital backgrounds. Each image is printed instantly. Photo folders are optional. Mitzvah name and date gets printed on each image, making this a great souvenir. Mica joined me and did the greenscreen photography and instant printing while I captured the event.

The party started with cocktail hour. There were introductions, blessings over bread, lunch, father-daughter dance, candle lighting and hora. Tara’s family and friends had travelled from all over to attend her mitzvah and celebration. Kids enjoyed games. Great party!

Mica and I enjoyed being part of this special occasion. We hope to capture many more mitzvahs.

It may snow tomorrow and we will be on our way to another great event…

Raleigh Baby Photographer – Baby Brennan’s holiday portraits

We love babies! So, when our firefighter friend Courtney visited us with her family and the new baby, we took the opportunity to do a quick holiday portrait session. Brennan was very cooperative! He did not like the idea of wearing a Christmas Stocking so much (I wouldn’t too!)! But, he gave us many fun images. Here are some of our favorites…

Holiday is a great time for family portraits. We will be posting images of our holiday portrait sessions soon…

Sam’s Bar Mitzvah ~ by Raleigh Event Photographer

Sam’s Mitzvah, a really incredible time for the whole family.  Sam’s family is SO fun and has so much love for him!  He had family come for his Bar Mitzvah all the way from California!  It was such a special time.

His service was at Beth Meyer Synagogue, and his party was at North Hills Club.  His Mom handles all he details right down to the final decisions, and she did an awesome job!  There was so much care in all that she did and you could see it in every corner.  Sam’s Mom even sang to him and everyone was just taken over by the love that this family shares.  It was all any one talked about afterwards.

Sam’s Dad was so proud and ever so often, when he was seen standing alone looking at Sam, you could see how proud he was of his Son, and how the years seem to just fly by to this moment.

Sam’s friends enjoyed themselves and North Hills Club made it a great time for all.

May you live to see your world fulfilled, May you be our link to future worlds, and may your hope encompass all the generations to be. May your heart conceive with understanding, may your mouth speak wisdom and your tongue be stirred with sounds of joy. May your gaze be straight and sure, your eyes be lit with Torah’s lamp, your face aglow with heaven’s radiance, your lips expressing words of knowledge, and your inner self alive with righteousness. And may you always rush in eagerness to hear the words of One more ancient than all time.
Talmud, Brachot 17A

IWP Photography & Video was honored to be a part of this event!  Congrats Sam!

Lately, we have traveled to the North Carolina coast for weddings and portraits. We photographed Lauren & Whit’s wedding in beautiful Beaufort (NC). Those photos are coming soon! Check out our Facebook page: for more information. We will also be offering new promotions on our Facebook page- so be sure to become a fan!

Last week, we photographed Fairfield family on the beach as part of our scheduled portrait sessions. Originally, we had planned the session on Emerald Isle. But, we ended up in Pine Knoll Shores. The weather was unpredictable! It rained on and off during the day and evening. But, sometimes you have to just hang in to capture that beautiful lights. So, we are glad that we persevered! We enjoyed working with Lenny, Starla and kids. At the end of the session, the sky was amazing! Tesh plans to make a painting! If you like arts, be sure to check out Tesh’s work: and Tesh will  be painting live next weekend at a Wedding in Greensboro and on July 30 in Raleigh.

Here is a review of Fairfield family portrait session…
