Covering the The Helene Foundation Annual Gala 2016 is the best!!! I love it when an event is seamless ~ these guys have it down. It was an honor to photograph this event again ~ seeing a lot of the same faces from last year and then all the new faces! The Helene Foundation does amazing work in this community and it is an opportunity for me to see the good that is being done, happening right here in the area. The Helene Foundation Gala 2016 celebrates the opportunity to give to those who need the help while going through cancer treatment. I am so proud of this foundation and all who play a part in making this event so successful! Enjoy a few of the photos! I had a blast and so did everyone else!

Who We Are
The Helene Foundation is a non-profit organization that was established in 2009 in honor of Helene Davidian. Although she retired from nursing when her children were born, she spent her life serving and giving to others. In May 2008, she was diagnosed with cancer and was taken from us on May 31, 2009. The Davidian family felt that establishing a Foundation in her name would allow her to continue her passion of serving and giving to others.
The Helene Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing assistance to North Carolina families with mothers actively undergoing cancer treatments. We focus on immediate, practical support and services for mothers and families fighting cancer.
The assistance we provide includes, but is not limited to, meals for the families delivered to the home, housecleaning, child care, tutoring services if needed, and assistance with arranging transportation to medical appointments. Each family and situation is unique and their services are based on the mother’s requests. The Helene Foundation strives to help families keep as normal an environment as possible while engaged in their cancer fight. Families are referred by a hospital social worker, and upon acceptance, are “adopted” for a 6 month period. Should the mother lose her fight with cancer, the family continues to receive assistance through their 6 month adoption. Since 2009, the Helene Foundation has provided over $100,000 to 32 North Carolina families!

I have to admit that I complain a lot. About almost everything- business, bills, insurance, weather, health, government, traffic, social media, internet, smartphones, f-stops, shutter speeds, ISO- the list goes on… And then I find myself photographing the memorial service for fallen firefighters. I am in a room (a big one- ballroom at the Raleigh Convention Center) full of these brave firefighters, their families and friends. And candles which are symbolic of the fallen firefighters. And there are many candles. Each fallen firefighter will be remembered. Each candle will be lit. Loved ones of the fallen firefighter will stand up (some more than once). It is quiet in the room, except for the announcement of names. This brotherhood is strong. I salute the ones who are present in the room and pray for the ones who are being remembered. Thank you for your sacrifices. Thank you for risking your lives and everything else to save others. At end of the service, loved ones will find candles of their fallen ones. I have friends who are firefighters. And I have friends who were saved by the firefighters. Just looking at these images brings tears to my eyes…

Our last day of the photo and video assignment for the Lotus Survival Foundation. We will leave St. Petersburg, Florida tomorrow and head home to Raleigh. We were honored to be part of this retreat. We have met many wonderful participants, speakers and Lotus team members. Claudia and Jose Aguirre continue to amaze us! We thank them for this wonderful opportunity. Today’s featured speakers were Amy Sear, and Scott Phillips. Amy gave a seminar on Asian secrets of self-healing. Scott, who is with Oncology at the Heritage hospital, gave a seminar on Patient Navigation. Very useful information. Lotus Foundation will be sharing information that can benefit both survivors and caregivers. Please check Foundation’s website: http://www.lotussurvivalfoundation.org in next few days.
This concludes our photography posts on the retreat. We will be posting video clips in next few days. Tesh is working on Tina and Divakar’s Wedding images and will be posting Ceremony and Reception preview soon.

The Day 3 of the retreat featured many speakers who educated participants on variety of topics. Featured here are Susan McHugh, Xiomara Boyce, Tania Fabela and Get REAL & HEEL team from UNC- Amber, DJ, and Jean. All the sessions are very interactive with everyone sharing their life experiences. If one thing I will take away from this retreat is that I should never complaint- there are some amazing folks here who have overcome incredible odds to not only survive, but, thrive! And Audrey Giron was there to make everyone laugh! Mica had photographed Audrey’s Laughing Yoga session couple of days ago. Tomorrow morning I will be off to video her another session in the morning!

Breakfast was followed by Susan McHugh‘s session on dealing with difficult feelings. Areanne Breedlove provided Tax advice. Lori Ovitz did an amazing make over session! Lori will be doing this session for all the participants. There was even a birthday celebration for one of the participants!
